A few years before Adobe Photoshop enabled photographers and designers to seamlessly stitch together consecutive images into panoramic composites, Granite Bay Design worked with photographer Harold Shapiro who used a special camera to capture several 360° images. The images, used for the Regional Water Authority’s 2002 Annual Report, were captured on single strips of film. Working with Core Advertising, Granite Bay Design produced a series of brochures for Environmental Data Resources, Inc., which featured covers and interior graphic columns with heavy use of photo montage. Some of our background images were from stock sources, but much of the detail came from a wealth of maps and diagrams which EDR produced. An example of a small scale annual report, this piece is just 7" square when folded. The small scale gave us a way to create a piece appropriate to the content while presenting the Fund in a modest, but attractive way. The small die cut reveals a tiny portion of a tract of Regional Water Authority land, in 360° panoramic format when opened. The cover of the pamphlet is a composite of two stock images. The original content of the blackboard was removed and replaced with watershed-relevant words. Deconstruct and reconstruct. For Quinnipiac University’s 2001-2002 Annual Report, I looked through hundreds of client-supplied images to build a series of 15 full-page photo montages. Each montage uses shapes and outlines pulled from the images as part of the compositions. To further enhance the photo composites, I also created separate gloss and a matte varnish plates with subtle areas knocked out of both to create additional patterns and textures.
