Navigating the Crescent Residence Hall: Part 1

Quinnipiac University’s Crescent Residence Hall, located atop the York Hill campus is a striking architectural achievement. Because of its size and unusual shape, it posed unique signage challenges, not the least of which was how to let residents—and especially visitors—know where they were at any given moment (what floor, what “pod” section, and which way to turn to get to another interior destination…).

Granite Bay Design was active from the outset in working with the University to develop a navigation system that would quickly and clearly tell visitors “you are here.” We were fortunate to be able to tour the residence hall while under construction, giving us plenty of lead-time to develop a unique wayfinding system. The photos on this page show our earliest encounters with the architecture, through the navigation’s formative stages until the first sign was hung.
